Review of Deep Impact (1998) by David G — 13 Aug 2012
In the world of apocalyptic disaster flicks, Deep Impact differs from your typical Roland Emmerich destruct-o-thon in being far more interested in the characters, relationships and drama than special effects and mass death, however, while that does allow more emotional investment, it doesn't help a massive amount when so many of the characters are not actually that likable. Outside of the Tea Leoni/Maximilian Schell storyline and Morgan Freeman as the Prez there isn't a huge amount on offer apart from some dull astronauts and lots of annoying, shouty newsroom people.
As a whole though it's a decent film. Cheesy and melodramatic sure, but you're always going to get that. The comet impact itself is very well done - powerful and visually impressive but without going over the top.
