Review of Deep Blue Sea (1999) by Alex A — 03 Jan 2010
A team of DNA-altering scientists, experimenting on shark brains, is seeking a cure for Alzheimer's which then results in an unfortunate increase in the sharks' intelligence. During a terrible storm, the sharks break through the under-sea Marine lab and go against the humans.
LL Cool J is my favorite as the ex-preacher turned cook. I liked the scene when he was throwing a lighter in a room full of oven gas and one of the sharks: He raises the lighter and says calmly: "You ate my bird." Samuel Jackson is the rich guy financing the project. And we have Thomas Jane as the resident shark hunter with the body of a Male Model.
It is pretty clear this was no Jaws but Deep Blue Sea was great fun to watch. It has some thrills (Saffron Burrows stripping to her undies to so she can off a shark), some chills (people getting bitten in half) along with some of the most grotesque, bloody, and violent sequences I have ever seen. Just put aside the disbelief, and immerse yourself in this one!
