Review of Deep Blue Sea (1999) by Evan C — 14 Jun 2015
It was my opinion that good shark movies died right after Jaws 2 (1978), but it turns out, Deep Blue Sea proved me wrong.
With one of the most interesting plot lines I have ever seen, Deep Blue Sea has a collection of memorable characters, with a good cast. The production design is incredible, and it's the type of movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire way, even if the scene isn't suspenseful.
The first thing I'd like to note is the CGI. For 1999, the CGI is impressive. The explosions, the blood, and of course, the sharks, look great. The thing that really makes me proud is that the sharks were not CGI through the whole movie. The animatronic sharks look surprisingly real, which I didn't expect. It's just like Jaws, it's incredible how actors like the Deep Blue Sea cast can all have perfect chemistry with a robot.
During the main course of the film, survival is everything. Many lives are lost. The good news is, we don't know who is going to win it, or loose it. I find this being a great effect in this movie, because the shark's look terrifying. I get goosebumps, and shiver a little, even when the shark is just swimming around.
Deep Blue Sea is a thrilling and unique movie, and is a film with impressive effects, acting, and a good story. Renny Harlin shows us that shark movies still have a chance.
