A totally great flick that no one is likely to see which is s huge shame. The guys who marketed this flick really missed the boat. Just checking out the DVD cover (as opposed to the theatrical poster which rocks) gives the impression that this is a standard chick flick. It's not.....and Thank god for that...
Theroux has an obvious gift and he uses it to tell this odd little tale with a lot of affection. He is clearly attached to these characters and it shows.
Billy is just fantastic as usual. His character says somw pretty despicable things at times, but you don't hate him for it. That is down to Billy, the way he delivers his lines and the subtle looks and gestures just left me grinning. His scenes with Tom Wilkinson especially radiate a playfulness and sadness at times which is very effective. Mandy Moore comes off really well too. She underplays nicely here and I was drawn in by her easily. Bob Balaban is also very funny in this as well. Billy's immediate responses to him during their meetings are just awesome.
The dialogue is a lot of fun and the dry quirky humour that coarses through the film makes this a keeper. The music choices are quite inspired too.
All in all, a fine flick that I hope finds it's audience.
