Review of Dedication (2007) by Jess L — 21 Feb 2008
I have a new found love for Billy Crudup post Almost Famous days. He is simply amazing in this neurotic role and despite all his character's flaws keeps the audience on his side the entire time. Moore was a surprise in this role, usually her romantic comedy roles leave a lot to be desired but she's finally stumbled across a script that she can work with and one which highlights her strong points.
This is Justin Theroux's directorical debut and I have to say I am pretty impressed. There are some visual techniques used here which I thought worked really well to enhance the story and its characters.
This twisted romantic comedy is a must see for anyone with a dry sense of humour that might demand a bit more from what has become a tired mainstream genre nowadays. On the back of seeing 27 dresses this movie is a masterpiece for me, there was something about it that I just fell in love with. The combination of the desperation, the longing, the realization, the subtle romantic interludes and the bitterness. I especially enjoyed the ongoing relationship and conversations Henry had with Rudy after his death, it gave a real insight into the inner character.
A completely unique and entrancing romantic drama comedy that I highly recommend.
