Review of Deathwatch (2002) by Stephen R — 07 Feb 2010
Meh. Despite the decent cast of English thesps; Jamie Bell the young innocent in the horrors of war, Andy Serkis the lunatic psychopath, Kris Marshall as 'what's HE doing here, oh it's OK, he's dead now'...
The film makes massive efforts to deliver authenticity: the trenches are suitably wet, muddy and grim. But that seems to be where all the money and effort went. The script is flimsy, the 'horror' effects are pretty tame, and the build-up of suspense lurches from one set-piece death to the next.
In the end, it's just a haunted place. And despite the novelty of this setting, it could have been anywhere. And it's been done much better anywhere too.
