Review of Deathwatch (2002) by Bryon V — 20 May 2011
It's interesting, yes...and certainly better than a lot of horror movies out there...but there's just something missing. Well, actually a lot of things.
THE GOOD: Production values, majority of FX (the little bit of CGI employed is very "SyFy Channel," but luckily it doesn't rely solely upon that...), the score is fairly creepy, and there are some truly spooky moments...oh, and it has Andy Serkis in it, though his character is the most over the top unbelievable of them all...
THE BAD: Pacing! (Seriously...sometimes it's like you're watching scenes that have only been added to "pad out" the movie and make it longer), the characters' motivations are often confusing, the "mythology" of the supernatural element is not really well-developed (It kinda felt like they were making it up as they went along, really...and consistency be damned!).
