Review of Deathwatch (2002) by Sarah W — 29 Aug 2008
Deathwatch is a multi-layered film. The bottom layer is mud, the top layer is rain, and the middle layer is a bunch of British soldiers running around pointing their guns and shouting the F-word at each other. I was expecting either a zombi movie or kind of WWI version of Michael Mann's "The Keep", but all you get is a recycling of a horror cliche that was probably old when Star Trek used it in "Day of the Dove", with some imagery that I had already seen in the admittedly more recent "Silent Hill", and a pseudo-"metaphysical" ending that merely tries to make the film appear more profound than the costume teen-death movie it actually is.
If you really want to see a good show with Shakespeare in a burrow, I suggest you watch "Meerkat Manor" instead.
As for me, I have decided to return to my former policy of avoiding movies with strong language throughout. Not only are they unpleasant to listen to, they are also usually bad, so I won't be missing much.
