Review of Death Warrant (1990) by Mark G — 18 Jan 2008

Make no mistake, this movie is a terrible movie but at the very least it's poor performance causes it to reach the area of being so bad it's somewhat entertaining.
Once you get past the fact that the "prison" that Jean Claude Van Damme, is a prison in name only you can begin to enjoy the movie for the corny action..
Anyways, Van Damme plays the role of an undercover cop who has been sent to California State Prison to find out the cause of a series of prison murders. Of course, Van Damme is able to do this, as the prison seems to be a prison in name only. Prisoners are allowed to wander the prison halls without restriction, contraband is abundant which then asks the question, how to the hardass gaurds succeed in, well frankly doing anything in this prison?.
The film quickly spirals down to an interesting nefarious reason for the prison murders, which in a serious movie would be spinechilling. However, as this movie spirals down we are treated to a ridiculous fight scene between Van Damme and an antagonist from the start of the movie. Specfically, Van Damme screaming and hulking himself up, to only be hit in the skull by a flying wrench has a certain comedic value..
As I said, make no mistake, Death Warrant is a terrible movie, and it doesn't have enough Kung-Fu roundhouse kicking action, once comes to expect from a Van Damme movie. However, it's poor acting, poor script and lip service to the prison system is at least entertaining..
