Review of Death Rides a Horse (1967) by Tatah H — 23 Apr 2008
A young gunslinger out to revenge the brutal murder of his family (Law) and an ex-convict out for revenge against the gang that double-crossed him (Van Cleef) hunt the same quarry in an uneasy alliance.
"Death Rides a Horse" is a fairly standard and predictable revenge-themed spaghetti western elevated by intense performances by leads John Phillip Law and Lee Van Cleef. A "surprise twist" at the end that any viewer older than 13 should be able to see coming is nonetheless decently executed--and was simply a question of WHEN the Big Reveal would happen--and serves the film better than more "clever" endings that ruint too many movies.
With strong performances from all cast members, a number of decent shoot-outs and a nice musical score, fans of the gritty, sweat-stained Italian westerns from the 1960s and 1970s will find a lot to like to about this film.
