There's an old 1970s movie called "Death Race 2000". I've never seen it, but Paul W.S Anderson obviously as he uses the basic premise of (my understanding) of it for this remake, starring Jason Statham.
Apart from the name of the film, the fact that it's a Paul WS Anderson movie (who also did the likes of Alien Vs Predator and Resident Evil) should tell you pretty much what to expect: in effect, a live-action version of a video game!
