Review of Death Race 2000 (1975) by Marc-Olivier J — 21 Aug 2008
ROLLERBALL was a Sci-Fi film with a reasonable budget and a major A-list star (James Caan before he slid off the A-list). Roger Corman asked Paul Bartel to come up with something for the drive-in and grindhouse market that New World pictures supported that would be a lower budget takeoff on ROLLERBALL.
The result was this film; which turned out to be way more fun than ROLLERBALL. No budget to speak of though the cars are well-designed. It is intended as satire. Sylvester Stallone would soon star as ROCKY and graduate from doping B-movies like this, but he is great here.
