Review of Death Race 2000 (1975) by Calvin L — 06 Sep 2008
Since the remake is in theaters now I thought I'd check out this "classic" piece of seventies exploitation cheddar. Like a combo between "Mad Max" and "The Running Man", "Death Race 2000" rips along at turbo speed with a bunch of freaked-out cars, bloody road-kills, comic book characters and surprisingly good high speed camera work.
Worth a recommendation just to watch Carradine do something other than judo chop someone and to catch a pre-"Rocky" Sly Stallone as a crazed greaseball speed demon. Utterly bizarre and compulsively watchable low-budget shlockfest with plenty of gallows humor and subtext to carry it through.
Has to be seen to be believed. Tilt: up.
