Review of Death Proof (2007) by Rogerinho S — 26 Jun 2012
Death Proof is a Quentin Taratino film made to be part of a double feature along with Robert Rodriguez's film "Planet Terror. I personally enjoyed Planet Terror more because it was much more exciting, but this is still a true Taratino film and a great example of why he is one of my all-time favorite directors.
This script has the dialogue of Quentin taratino film, and it has a certain essence of his movies that makes it enjoyable to watch. What really made the film great was its cast, which was almost completely female actresses and Kurt Russell.
Kurt Russell is really fun in the film, he plays a role that just seems right for him and he does it so well. He was insane and really made the role suspenseful. Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito,Jordan Ladd,Rose McGowan, Zoe Bell (who plays herself), and all the rest of the actresses played drug using and thrill seeking party girls who all seem to combine into one big Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman's character in Taratino's film Pulp Fiction).
But they all seem to provide some solid acting and good performances. The dialogue keeps the film going, but after a certain point the film gets very slow and in a Taratino film I like to have excitement in the script as well as the blood.
The thrlling moments with Kurt Russell as the serial killer are fun and get the film back on track, but it happens very little so I have to take what I can get. People call this Quentin taratino's weakest film, and its true that this is his weakest effort, but this is definently still a good movie that keeps the tone and feel of a movie he makes.
He is probably my third favorite director (behind Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan), so seeing this movie is always a treat knowing its made by him. He does make it feel like a true grindhouse film, and I think most people agree that Planet Terror was far more exciting.
Death Proof is a fun and well written film, it just doesn't match the other masterpieces from the masterful director.
