I don't know, maybe devoting ten minutes or so at the front of the movie to deliver a secret origin for Poirot's mustache is not a way to endear audiences to the movie. It takes way too long for the story to get going, with the first murder not happening for about an hour and twenty minutes.
That said, it is a competently done period piece.
