Review of Death Note (2017) by Garrett W — 24 Aug 2017
A complete betrayal of the anime and manga. I understand that in order to fit into 2 hours movies have to cut scenes and change some of the original plot, but the characters in this were terrible. Not their acting but their design. Light in the anime and manga is a god-complex driven mastermind who manipulates others and uses everything he has to his advantage. In the movie Light is a socially idiotic dweeb who is obsessed with a cheerleader (Mia) to the point where he brags about murdering someone to her and shows her the death note. Ryuk was a horror tactic in the movie instead of the more comic-relief based character in the anime. He had very little interest in anything other than seeing people die. Where as in the anime Ryuk was incredibly interested in Light.
I honestly don't think the writers of this movie actually read the manga or watched the anime. I knew it was going to be crappy since live animations almost always are, but this is just depressing.
