Review of Death Note (2017) by Brendan N — 25 Aug 2017
I liked the plot and while the intrigue was there, it swapped a lot of the exposition for a weak human storyline. The central villain played by Dafoe is the main interest here as the plotline abandons even attempting to explain who or what he is.
I normally defend films like this who start off with no answers but come on, you can't give us such an empty plot device, that's just a lazy cop out. The actors here are quite good and Mia twist was quite unexpected but the film struggles to develop the basics.
The movie has cliche back stories that are interesting but have no substance in the scheme of things, I felt the running time was just too short. We deserve a sequel just to fill in the blanks and while Wingard has an eye for cinematic horror films, this never gets going long enough to leave us an ending like that.
