Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Hugo M — 04 Nov 2007
A Visconti masterpiece this is an absolute work of art who takes full advantage of Thomas Mann's book and takes it further by transforming Aschenbach from a writer into a composer and coupling him with Gustav Mahler's beautiful music, especially the Adagietto from the 5th Symphony.
It's a movie about beauty, more specifically the quest of an aging artist for the perfect beauty he has tried to achieve with his art and failed. He finds it in the androgynous figure of Tadzio.
