Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Clement L — 11 May 2010
A beautiful film about searching the beauty of art. This movie should be shown to more students because the argument between art and morale is the main topic of this film, a pessimistic argument on compromise.
The search of ultimate art is eternal because of life and standard. Human degradation might be the support to art creation ("Evil is the food for genius."). However, it is a path for artists to suffer because of conventions.
Visconti certainly used Thomas Mann's novel, which is loosely based on Mahler's personal experience, to talk about himself.
