Review of Death in Granada (1996) by Lawrence A — 09 Aug 2010
I have loved this film since I first saw it ten years ago. At that time it was a hint to me that Andy Garcia was developing into a serious actor with a serious artistic vision. So for the record, let me point out that Garcia has since done a trio of biographical films, all representing the artist in conflict with society.
They are: 1) The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca (1998); 2) For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story (2001); and 3) Modigliani (2004). These works, all biographies of ethnic heavyweights, told of the turbulent lives of a Spanish poet/playwright, a Cuban jazz musician and a Spanish painter.
All were terrific and although I recommend all three, this one is my favorite. Each of these titles is available through the Great Red Envelope whose name cannot be spoken.
