Review of Death at a Funeral (2007) by Tomislav A — 24 Feb 2010

This is funny stuff. I like British humor. I don't know, there's something about the accent, about the normal circumstances and lives they try to portrait...And what I personally like about foreign movies is that there are usually no appealing faces or too good-looking man or women. Everything feels so everyday-like and that is why I sometimes feel more connected to movies like this.

The story is quite simple. One whole family is gathered for a funeral. There of course are people who count as a wider circle of the family, wives, lovers, distant relatives...You can assume, since this is a comedy, that things start to go awfully wrong...And only this much I can tell you without spoiling the movie. Everything is simple, so what? Absolutely anyone can watch this and be entertained, from small children to older folks. It just works out no matter who, and how old are you. The uknown English cast did a fine job of portraying one family, and I think they had the needed chemistry between them. The laughs are the brightest spot of this one I'd say. There are some really funny scenes that you'll be re-telling your friends afterwards. I personally liked the scene in the bathroom with Simon locking himself inside and...Well, you'll just need to see this.

You won't feel much after you have seen this. I personally started thinking how funerals do not need to be so depressing all the time, but I guess there's nothing much to be done about that. Death At A Funeral is truly light-hearted, funny and most of all simple. There are no BIG flaws you can name, but if I had to name one, it would definately be that it is quite forgettable. But I would like to add that this one does not try to be anything that it isn't. It succeeds doing what it intended and I'd recommend it as a source of quite a few laughs.
