Review of Death at a Funeral (2007) by Dawdlingpoet — 24 Nov 2021
This is a typical British comedy in some respects, its certainly very farcical. It reminded me of the BBC show 'The Worst Week of my Life', in that certainly things go from bad to worse and the problems escalate into utter farce.
This movie will either make you wince and cringe, or it'll make you laugh at the sheer absurdity of it. You'll be glad that this is another family and not your own!
There are a variety of characters in the movie, from a flirtatious and supposedly successful novel writer, to an overly fidgety and health conscious relative, to a wheelchair bound uncle with a rather foul mouth and so on.
It does have some pretty ridiculous scenes which are quite daft and the humour definitely comes from the absurdity of it all. At the end, it does get a bit sappy and sentimental, which isn't really in keeping with the rest of the movie.
The cast all give decent performances and the movie works pretty well, although it did feel a bit like a one-off TV comedy drama than a big hit movie, per se.
This is a movie that gets its laughs from absurd and embarrassing situations, with characters disgracing themselves and finding themselves in difficult situations. There is a crudeness to it, of course, it is quite a crude movie with alot of strong language used and so I wouldn't recommend it if your too easily offended by such things, especially given the fact its based around a funeral, which may be a very touchy subject for some. Me? I'm just glad that im not from that family and didn't have to witness such an eventful funeral!.
