Review of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) by Jared M — 03 Jul 2009
Heartbreaking, gut wrenching, tragic and yet uplifting. This documentary tells the amazing, yet true story of the life and death of Andrew Bagby and the tragic and frustrating aftermath that involves a custody battle over his infant son, Zachary, between his parents, David and Kathleen, and his ex-girlfriend/murder suspect, Shirley Turner. Long time friend to Andrew and director, Kurt Kuenne, decided to make a film about his friend so his son would know what his father was like and how loved he was by everyone who knew him. This film plays almost like that awkward get together after the funeral where emotions run high, stories overlap one another and when someone dies a senseless death, people try to put the pieces together to make sense of it all and to make sure whoever is to blame pays for their crime. This movie moved me to tears more than once, not only because the story was so gripping, but Kuenne's presentation of it was so well done. It can be hard to sit through at times, but I would highly, highly recommend this film to everyone. This was easily one of the best films of 2008.
