Review of Dear White People (2014) by Thomas C — 10 Dec 2015
Desperately tried not to be Do The Right Thing in college, but ended up being just that. I saw a one to one ratio of some of the characters roles in those movies. Lionel Higgins = Mookie, the apolitical character who just wants to make a living (for Mookie selling pizza, and Higgins as a journalist), but who ends up starting a riot at the end of the movie.
Sam White = Buggin Out, the activist character who seems to take issues to far (often for comic relief). Kurt Fletcher = Pino, the blatantly racist character who is also the son of the main character's boss (Sal in Do the Right Thing and the president of the college in Dear White People).
It was a good movie, but it was just another remake like Robocop or Star Trek (not to say those are bad movies, they're just unoriginal).
