Review of Dear John (2010) by Jennifer A — 09 Mar 2011
Dear John (2010) - 3.8/10.
Director - Lasse Hallstrom.
Cast - Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Richard Jenkins, Henry Thomas, DJ Cotrona,.
Another Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook) adaptation. Savannah Curtis (Seyfried) is a college student on spring break when she meets Tyree (a Special Forces soldier) who is on leave from the military. Tyree is smitten and a two-week romance ensues before Tyree must return to service. He has one year left on his tour and then he plans to leave the military for Savannah. When the 9/11 attacks occur, Tyree decides to re-enlist, jeopardizing the budding romance.
While it's not a complete disaster, it's not very good either. I never fully bought the relationship to begin with and have never been impressed by Tatum as an actor. The best moments actually belong to Richard Jenkins, as Tyree's father. Hardcore fans of Sparks should like this, but it won't draw new fans in like "The Notebook".
