Review of Deadpool (2016) by Stephen B — 18 Aug 2016

If this was the morning after opening night it'd be a perfect five stars, but upon viewing it for a second time in the comfort of my own home it is a completely different experience. Seeing this gem on the big screen was the single best cinema going experience in my life. The screen was sold out, everyone was screaming with laughter at every minute. But that might be why I had tears streaming down my face and cheek ache from grinning too much - Laughter is contagious and I may have thought the jokes were funnier than they actually were. Watching Deadpool on Blu-Ray is still a lot of fun but in no way is it as hard hitting as it was in that multiplex.

The CGI is used as it's used in cheap TV shows, to guide the story along without caring too much about how it looks. Indeed, this isn't really a film to be complaining about its CGI, but why should we have that mindset when films are supposed to look good. The plot is thin too, simple bad guy revenge story that could have been written by a 10yr old. It seems that the only argument to defend this thing is for it's comedy and for the casting of Deadpool, but it's a GREAT defence.

This role was made for Ryan Reynolds. He may not be the most talented actor, but he is one of the most charismatic. And this film could have easily failed if not for Reynolds' charisma. The fight scenes are so greatly choreographed too.

The film is very of the moment. In 20 years time this film will only mean anything to the people who saw it in the cinema on opening night, and that's if they remember it. However, Deadpool is still one of the most wonderful surprises in recent memory. This is the greatest comic book movie AND comedy of 2015.
