Review of Deadpool (2016) by Josh H — 12 Oct 2018
I have mixed feelings on Deadpool.
For the most part, I appreciate the film's sense of humour. The comedic take on a cliche superhero movie is somewhat original and entertaining, and the ways in which the "fourth wall" is broken are funny and unexpected. However, there are also times where I personally felt the movie tried too hard to be funny, and failed as a result. It also occasionally came across like it desperately wanted to be perceived as "edgy"/cool, like a less-good imitation of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad.
I recall it having a few witty one-liners, though I couldn't name them if you asked me to. The film ultimately lacks quotability, which is fine if you're not into that kind of thing, but I found it a let-down.
The protagonist is somewhat likeable, and his crude humour is pretty funny. I like that he doesn't embody too many "alpha male" traits, however he doesn't really stand out.
Overall, it was a pleasant film but didn't really leave any lasting impact on me. On the basis of this movie, I'd happily watch the sequel if I were to be invited by friends, but I doubt I would actively seek it. Deadpool just doesn't leave enough impact for me to be excited by the concept of a sequel.
