Review of Deadpool (2016) by Richard B — 29 Dec 2016
Cesspool.
The people who like Deadpool have no taste. Zero, nil, zilch. It is gruesome, unfunny, profane and tasteless.Watching it is like staring at a fatal traffic accident.
For all its 'originality' it is as old fashioned. Our hero falls in love, finds out he is fatally ill, seeks a cure worse than the disease, becomes immortal and seeks revenge. In the end, it's all good - he gets the girl despite his face looking like a pizza. There is some energy and enthusiasm in the performances, but you never believe any of them for a second. Ryan Reynolds is energetic but ugly, Morena Baccarin is very attractive but still plastic, and the villain Ed Skein is too Jason Statham to be real.
It used to be that heroes tried to be good, and stories had moral centres. Noir thinking turned that around - but this film can't decide whether it is a hero story with a twist or a true noir story. For me, its just a failure - not thrilling or funny, but ugly and crude.
