Review of Deadgirl (2008) by Doctorburglary ( — 10 Aug 2009
Two dudes that are not really the coolest guys in school discover a strangely zombified naked woman tied up in a secluded area of an abandoned mental hospital.. not being really sure whyshe is there or what kind of a living-dead condition shes suffering from, noticing that the cutie still has a sexy body, all juiced up and free of decomposing that wouldnt be the case with a common kind of corpse, one of the guys decides to- fuck her and make her his sex slave.. the other guy seems to have some strange ethical problems with that but he keeps comin round.. so the film has its good sides- a interesting plot innovation within the zombie horror genre mixed with some attempts of gender/sexuality analysis, references to the repetitious sadistic pleasures in pornography, all within a school setting, a cute-in-a-scary-way zombie girl etc. the 1/3 of the film is pretty promising in its genre-bending pop exploration of the darker sides of mankind.. but then as the film proceeds, it seems that the authors were so fascinated by their initial idea that they forgot to really work it trough.. so they had to add some unnecessary subplots and twists, the story seems to go nowhere with a kind of a uninspiring resolution in the end.. the film flirts a lot with a overtly exploited version of an essentialist understanding of a dark "specificly male" view of male-female sexual relations, even adding some explicit guilt trip sentences referring to pornography, s/m etc. as if it tends to make some sort of emancipatory commentary but it all seems too conservative in a specifically "male gaze" sort of "fake" pro-female activism and victimization way.. you know its the "poor girl is being used" and depends on a male savior sort of thing.. its also funny how fellacio/mouth fucking is presented in one scene as something almost exotic that only a crazy girl tied to bed is really good for and should be doing etc.
A more tempting and interesting part about the ending of the film is that the 'more romantic" guy that resisted the vulgar group fucking of the zombie girl is now having his own school sweetheart tied up on the same bed, but with some clothing around resembling monogamous marriage life sort of.. however this it also containing a bit of that common place simplified victimization agenda that tries to appear more provoking than it is and seems more patriarchal than it wants to present itself being.. so, all in all, a nice genre refreshing idea suffering from a lack of development and introspection.. for horror/zombie fans I would suggest this, with all its flaws its still a decent flick.. but this should have been a much more tasty treat..
