Review of Deadgirl (2008) by Vic R — 28 Dec 2009
First of all, this micro budgeted film looks great. I'd love to see what the directors and cinematographer do in the future. Also, they do an excellent job of maintaining the film's dark tone throughout.
They are not as successful at the occasional attempts at humor, however. The rest of the production is a mixed bag. While some of the cast is pretty strong, some really struggle with the material. Segan, especially, fails to convey his character's escalating obsession.
The fault isn't completely his, however. The script offers him little to work with. Although the writing has created an interesting scenario and is smart enough to delve into some of the film's subtext, it has trouble simply connecting the dots between the big scenes.
It clumsily struggles to even get the players into the same room with each other. Luckily the bigger scenes are pretty well handled and the sharp tone is able to sell some of the weaker material. The film asks some discomforting questions about the male sexual impulse and cover's similar ground as Argento's Jenifer although this is probably the more interesting and mature take on the material.
