Review of Dead Space: Downfall (2008) by Benjamin M — 07 Jul 2012
You know, it's corny. Sure. And some are calling it an Alien ripoff. But I think the Dead Space universe is actually one of the most intriguing and definitely one of the most frightening ones ever conceived. The idea of the necromorphs is very disturbing, as are their brutal capabilities. The budget was obviously not super high for this, but I still think for what it is, it worked very well. I loved Dead Space, and seeing the situation that happened on the Ishimura first hand is just as frightening as seeing it for the first time through Issac's eyes. And some of the scenes are just plain brutal. I was impressed with the level of gore, and for a Saturday morning X-men look-alike it was just as brutal as the games.
All in all, I wasn't even expecting an Oscar-worthy movie. I wanted to get further into the Dead Space universe, and maybe this was a cool piece to the puzzle. it actually exceeded my expectations, and I definitely recommend it for fans of the series.
I've always been a die hard Silent Hill fan. Right up the Shattered Memories. But in the now, I think Dead Space has claimed the title of the king of horror games. And it's great to see that, just like with Silent Hill, they're filling in the story with comic books and movies. Good for them.
And PS, I actually like this one more than Dead Space: Aftermath. But, even though Aftermath wasn't that great, it still filled in how the Marker affected both Stross and Issac. It has nothing on Dead Space 2, though.
