Review of Dead Space: Downfall (2008) by John P — 11 Oct 2014
This animated movie is the sequel to a six-part comic book miniseries and prequel to a video game of the same name. Not having read the comics or played the game yet, I assume the details of the whole ordeal are revealed through all three mediums.
The animation is more cartoonish than I was expecting. After a while, I warmed up to it, however. The zombie-like creatures look a bit silly compared to their video game counterparts. That style might work for Saturday morning cartoons, but this gruesome tale possibly would have been better served being CG-animated like 'Resident Evil: Degeneration' or drawn in a more realistic style.
As a standalone sci-fi/horror picture, I enjoyed it a lot, despite how cliché the plot and characters are; anyone familiar with 'Alien','The Thing', 'Event Horizon', and 'Resident Evil' knows the score and can pretty much predict what happens. Gratuitously gory, but still I found it thrilling and very entertaining throughout.
