Review of Dead Space: Aftermath (2011) by Owlz N — 08 Feb 2011
Four survivors of a failed mission tell their stories in an interrogation center... Were they trying to make space Rashomon?
Dead Space: Aftermath is done is a kind of half-hearted, animation festival format similar to the Animatrix and Halo movies. Hiring a different animator for each of these sequences since didn't really add anything in terms of mood or tone (other than the 3D which had an appropriate sterile feel to it). Nobody even gets to finish their entire side of the story. They just get interrupted at random points which prevents you from becoming too interested.
There's an evil government/company that wants the alien artifact for uhh...bad stuff? Their true goals are never really established. There's something mentioned about saving humanity with the artifact but it doesn't really matter since just about every character involved with this story either gets betrayed or killed by monsters. People seem to die for almost no reason and I suspect as filler for a dull movie about space, aliens, zombies, and tinfoil hats.
Yes, It's dull. Full of exposition/back story and only a little action at the end. Everything else is gross-out factor and a crummy video game plot reference at the end.
