Review of Dead Snow (2009) by Jani H — 21 Jul 2010
"Ein. Zwei. Die!".
Norwegian horror featuring Nazi zombies? Got me interested, for sure. But minutes before I started to watch 'Død snø', I was also sure of the fact that I would probably not see anything that spectacular.
A group of young Norwegian people head for their Eastern vacation to the mountains. Their vacation doesn't even get to start properly, when a stranger comes and scares them by telling stories about Nazis who never left the mountains after the second World War. The first cliché comes here... They should've listened to the man. Nazis want their gold, I'm telling you!
The major fault of the movie is that none of the characters are even slightly interesting to start with. If the director, Tommy Wirkola, plans to pay tribute to 'Evil Dead' or other horror classics, he should've wrote at least one decent character (like Ash from the movie mentioned before) to the movie. The first 30 mins or so are boring as hell. If I'm watching a gore movie, I wanna see gore. Not a bunch of people playing with snow or skiing etc.
When the fun starts, I'll admit there was some great gore effects that would've made even Tom Savini jealous. The last half of the movie saves this movie from being another cheap copy of the genre classics. The mix of gore and humor is shown with a good taste and I'll have to tell you one more time. Nazi zombies in the Norwegian mountains... That is original. Sadly, the rest of the movie is not.
But as a Finn, I have to tell you about the upcoming movie titled 'Iron Sky'. In that movie, Nazis fled to the Moon after the war. In 2018, they begin their attack against the States and their president, Jenna Bush (!). Now that is interesting! Should be coming out during 2011...
