Review of Dead Snow (2009) by Lee B — 27 Aug 2010
In the sense of violence, I have not seen a film as disgusting as this in a long time. (There are only so many sensible ways you can kill a zombie with a snow mobile.) The film boasts that it is one of the best zombie films of all time and a zombie comedy.
It is neither. What is intriguing about "Dead Snow" is the setting (snow) and the zombies (nazis). That's when it all goes wrong. The characters lack any central motivations and are too similar caming off as cardboard and difficult to relate to.
The zombies take too long to be revealed, and until they reach the survivors, kill humans with frightening stylized ease. (This leads you to wonder if the humans are carrying kryptonite rendering the zombies without their inhuman strength and power.
) The other problem is the humor. It never kicks in until the majority of our intrepid heroes are dead, leaving the story in a bloody mess. It maybe entertaining to a teenager looking for an over the top horror film, but for anybody else it just doesn't cut it and certainly doesn't hold a candle to "Zombieland".
2.2 stars.
