Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by Farid Z — 12 Jul 2007
Although they appear to be different to others, Beverly and Elliot are themselves unable to perceive themselves as separate people. Their lives are so intertwined that neither seems possible without the other.
Their success as gynecologists is predicated on their constant cooperation. Indeed, the twins' bond is too strong to allow them to lead personal love lives. Cronenberg beautifully depicts the slow deterioration of their condition as they attempt to grapple with their growing divide when Beverly falls in love with Claire, an actress who cannot bear children.
Ultimately, their shared identity proves irreconcilable with their need for autonomous lives.
