Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by Alyssa N — 10 Aug 2008
This psychological thriller about identical twin gynecologists is as fascinating as it is frightening. Unlike Cronenberg's earlier horror films, this one relies less on gore and special effects and more on disturbing imagery, such as one brother's set of twisted gynecological tools, and the unsettling tension between the brothers to keep us on edge.
The pace is a bit slow in some parts, but Jeremy Irons's spectacular performance in the dual role of the brothers was enough to keep me engaged even then. They may look identical, but there are scenes when you really can forget that they're played by the same person.
