Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by David S — 15 Sep 2010
One of Cronenberg's best films! All the themes and symbolisms are here, layering the narrative with a rich and dense sense of meaning; that there's something more lurking underneath its macabre tale of twins who share everything.
.. and everyone. The films highlight, however, is the amazing and nuanced performance given by Jeremy Irons in a tricky dual role; a performance that is so remarkable that I am quite shocked that he never received an Oscar nomination (that year's Oscar went to Michael Douglas for "Wall Street" but should of went here).
The pacing is indeed glacially slow with nothing outright disturbing or frightening as a viewer might have expected from a Croenberg film, but the chills present here are far more unnerving as they are subtle and psychological in nature.
Be forewarned, this is a character study and not a horror film!
