Review of Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982) by Andrea M — 15 Jul 2007
At once ingenious and low-brow, this admittedly gimmicky genre spoof has lots to enjoy. Steve Martin continues his symbiotic relationship with Carl Reiner - together they spawned the joyous Man With Two Brains, and The Jerk - in a film that takes a potentially one-joke idea and makes it work for a whole film.
The splicing of old footage is nothing short of brilliant, and it's often hilariously underplayed; the plot, involving cheese and Nazis, is pleasingly absurd, and the cast - particularly a crude yet oddly intelligent Steve Martin as the hero - are utterly winning.
Underrated madcap fun.
