Review of Dead Man's Shoes (2004) by Viginti T — 10 Sep 2009
Uncompromising in its violence and brutal in its emotion, this film packs a real punch. It is a perfectly told revenge story told for maximum drama and emotion without ever compromising its reality. The stalking and kills are all executed to plan not to standard narrative arcs which comes as a shock to someone so embedded with stock fare. It is technically flawless with the tension and mystery entwining majestically to enthral the viewer, with acting both astoundingly powerful and believable in equal parts and some fantastic cinematography.
This isn?t my usual kind of film but I really enjoyed it and how it is perhaps a revenge story focused more about the executor?s guilt than their redemption via vengeance which plays well both emotionally and in terms of verisimilitude. It has now put both Meadows and Considine squarely on my map and I?m very much looking forward to seeing more of them, and more of this, in the future.
