Review of Dead Like Me: Life After Death (2009) by John M — 07 Nov 2009
Doesn't really work, especially for those not familiar with the Showtime series. I am completely unknowledgeable of the series, but I can see how it would work in episode format with the runtime being about half as long.
It's about this band of grim reapers who get a new leader all very suddenly. This changes their ways of doing things, and soon, they all start slipping up. The main character reaper, Georgia reaps (I said REAPS) her sister's secret boyfriend, which leads to her reconnecting with her sister.
This might have made more sense to me if I had any back knowledge on the series, but I donâ??t, so I was left with a large number of unanswered questions, like why can reapers be seen and interact with people like a usual living person when they are, for all intensive purposes, ghosts? Dead Like Me: Life After Death expects you to know all the back story of all these characters, which I still don't, so none of it ever resonated with me.
Also, the movie has the tendency to wallow in the melodramatic, which really drags here and loses any momentum gained with some decent comedic scene. I have no idea if this pleased the fans of the series, but it feels like a cheaply made movie solely created for quick buck.
