Review of Dead Calm (1989) by Ross M — 30 Dec 2005
An 'early' Nicole Kidman movie back when she had her native Australian accent! ;) Some snazzy cinematic sailing shots. Isolation out on the open ocean makes for a very good claustrophobic horror/thriller.
Great seamanship from Neill saves the day though as the evil Billy Zane is righteously slain. The floating dead bodies are really creepy. Best scene - Neill losing the battle with the incoming water at first pumping the bilges, later struggling to breathe in a small pocket of air.
He has to dive down, deep down to the belly of the nightmare boat to make his escape from a certain drowning!
