Review of Dead Calm (1989) by Adam K — 20 Sep 2007
A very unique thriller that bares a different setting for its time. it has a very isolated feeling, which works well in building the situations and intensity of the film. it can easily be said that the film's highlight is its cast.
led by the talented sam niell and nicole kidman, the story being told as the background for the two characters paves the way well. what was most surprising to me was billy zane's performance. a young actor at the time appearing in one of his first big roles, he steals the show as the film's uniquely psychopathic villain.
at times, you may find the actions and reactions of the characters baffling and confusing, but it must all be focused on as a realistic form of shock and disbelief. philip noyce's directing and the quality of cinematography help this isolation-set thriller become a winner.
