Review of Dead Calm (1989) by Jeremy W — 28 Feb 2010
Nicole Kidman is so sexy and is one of my favorite actresses. This is one of her first films and her highest rated one on RT at 95%. This is a wonderful suspense thriller with great acting. Although we have all seen films like this before (and one of the first like this I saw) this is one I compare others to, which is why I don't like so many others like it.
John (Sam Neil) returning from his stint in the navy learns his son is dead and wife Rae (Nicole Kidman) is injured in a horrible car crash. To try to get his life back in order he and his wife take their Yacht out for some peace and quiet, but they get the quite opposite. After finding a tattered boat floating in the distance they decide to help and find one man left Hughie (Billy Zane) saying all the others died of food poisoning, but that may not be the whole truth.
This film is simple but well written by Charles Williams screenplay by Terry Hayes, and directed by Phillip Noyce who kept the tension up and pace steady. The acting is the best part of this film all three of them did a great job. Without them this film would have been quite average.
Overall this is a film worth seeing and is better than many of the sloppy thrillers that I've seen in the last year or two. No gore needed or wanted and thankfully so. Will films like this ever come back who knows?
5 wins & 5 nominations.
