Review of De-Lovely (2004) by Lee C — 09 Jun 2007
Caring for the characters in any movie is critical. Caring for the characters in a movie based on someone?s life is essential. De-Lovely failed to re-create the character and the life of Cole Porter (Kevin Kline) in a way that made me as an audience member, learning of this character for the first time, not only be interested, but care at all.
His relationship with Linda (Ashley Judd) was nothing worth thinking about, nor was his suffering through his bisexuality. The film was well put together and it combined well with the musical segments that turned the life story of Porter into a play, just as he would have written.
The film attempts to show us that Porter is witnessing his life?s mistakes and pleasures while he is in the audience. Nothing, however, is emotional enough for us to believe that he would actually be moved by his own life story.
The story was there, it just lacked the emotional push that was needed to turn this into a good movie. It dragged and just wasn?t entertaining enough to keep an audience focused for its two plus hours.
