Review of De-Lovely (2004) by Hannah M — 23 May 2012
Lovely, tender, entertaining perspectives on the deepest aspects of Cole Porter's life: the engine of his art, homosexuality, dealings with illness. I appreciate how there's no judgment of those things -- instead, just plain witnessing and recording.
Not to say that it's a boring, tasteless, journalistic exercise that subverts entertainment for information. Far from it... De-Lovely has plenty of fine, bubbly musical numbers and well-acted scenes, after an (admittedly, awkwardly arrhythmic) start to the frame narrative.
