Review of Dazed and Confused (1993) by Neil K — 27 Jan 2012
At first glance, this is a typical come-as-you-are teenage stoner comedy. But after a few minutes you begin to notice there's much more depth and reality to the characters. Flawlessly portrayed by a then-up-and-coming cast (including Ben Affleck in his finest performance), 'Dazed and Confused' reminds us who we were during the last few years of our public schooling.
Drinking from the well which inspired John Hughes's 'the Breakfast Club', director Richard Linklater has devised a huge spectrum of personalities drawn from our collective experiences without descending into shallow, formulaic and unrealistic directions.
One of the best character studies I've ever seen. Essential!
