Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Richard D — 12 Dec 2007
The kind of movie you just have to see at least once before you die - a visually stunning, emotionally moving, philosophical masterpiece that puts the futility of all human plans and schemes in perspective to the vast, uncaring world around us.
Just as we're becoming wrapped up in the story of one man's scheme to use his girlfriend to con a rich farmer out of his fortune, writer/director Terrence Malick unleashes Hell onto the landscape the characters live in to show how incredibly unimportant everything they (and, indeed, we) do really is in comparison to the universe we exist in.
With unbelievable photography, pitch-perfect acting, and young Linda Manz's unforgettable narration, Days of Heaven is a punch to your gut and a feast for your mind and eyes.
