Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Evelyn N — 12 Jan 2008
To comment on Almendros' stunningly brilliant cinematography - yes - the quintessential illustration of how a picture - a frame, a shot - can paint a thousand words. All the more illustrated by the fact that after two years of editing almost all the dialogue was cut ( reading an early script for the the film is a revelation) for a spare voice-over.
Voice-overs are often a dreadfull mistake. (Blade Runner anyone?) But not this time. I saw this film on its release and ever since then have Believed in Cinematography...
