Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Darryl J — 21 Aug 2008
There are certain films that really just strike me as masterpieces the first time I see them. 2001,La Dolce Vita,8 1/2, and now Days of Heaven.
This is the most beautiful film I've ever seen. I've NEVER been so consistently blown away by how a film looks(maybe 2001 but that's another kind of cinematic beauty.). Goddddd,I can't give it justice.
It's not just the imagery. I loved the story. Terrence Malik has created a sort of quasi-silent film. I love how the little girl tells the story. She's such a wonderful narrator because she doesn't really narrate. It's a sort of remembering that's mixed in with her random thoughts of the life she was living then and all this being capped off with her then naievte(if that makes sense). It makes for a more compelling film experience because it allows the director to make more of a voyeuristic film that essentially feels more real the being bombarded with scene after scene of drama.
Have I not mentioned the score? One of the best I've ever heard.
I think I've used " the best ever..." a lot in this review but it warrants for a little repetition.
